National [General] Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health of the   National Examinations Board for Occupational Safety and Health [NEBOSH]

Aim of the Course

This course prepares students for the NEBOSH qualification at Certificate level. Successful students will be eligible for Associate Membership of IOSH [The Institute for Occupational Safety and Health].

Who should attend?

The course is open to all students, but is particularly suitable for those with supervisory experience or responsibilities in a Health and Safety environment. Students may wish to visit www.nebosh.org.uk for syllabus information and past exam papers, and be prepared for the intensive academic demands of this course, by ensuring they are in possession of a pre-course reading book: Introduction to Health & Safety at Work by Philip Hughes and Ed Ferret, ISBN: 0750666234, published by Butterworth.

Course Duration

12 days. It is an intensive, formal classroom study and is supplemented by directed study, background reading, etc in the evenings and at weekends. The end-of-course examination consists of two, 2 hour written papers and a workshop based practical examination.

Course Content

The course provides the underpinning knowledge of Health and Safety related topics and teaches the skills and techniques through which Health and Safety procedures are implemented in the workplace. Principal subject areas include:

  • The foundations, policy and organising of Health & Safety in the workplace
  • Promoting a Health & Safety culture, Risk assessment and Principles of control
  • Movement of People and Vehicles, Manual & Mechanical Handling
  • Work Equipment, Electrical, Fire, Construction, Chemical & Biological Hazards
  • Physical & Psychological hazards, Incident investigation, Monitoring and review.

Qualifications Awarded

National (General) Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health from the National Examination Board for Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH).
